WATERVILLE ROTARY CLUB
POLICY FOR:
WORLD COMMUNITY
SERVICE
Mission Statement
World Community Service represents service to others and
international commitment – two major objectives of Rotary International. The Waterville Rotary Club places a high priority
on sharing financial and human resources to help people in developing
countries.
Action Guidelines
Recognizing the need to select from among many worth
projects and to ensure that moneys will be invested wisely, the Waterville
Rotary Club chooses to support those projects that meet certain
guidelines. They include:
- Helping
others can only be effective if the project responds to the perceived
needs of those being helped
- The
assistance must respect local customs and beliefs and be appropriate to the
culture and the level of technology of those being helped.
- A key
element is always education and training—to acquire the specific skills
necessary for the success of a project, but also those skills needed to
develop continuing community support.
There must be assurance that the project will take on a life of its
own and will continue to flourish after the project has been completed.
- The
project must be designed so as to extend its benefits to other individuals
and groups beyond the original ones, but recognizing that those who first
were helped must be trained in how to help others.
- A
project must be rigorously evaluated at its inception, during its
lifetime, and, if possible, through follow-up studies. To ensure effective evaluation, each
project must identify measurable objectives and the effectiveness of the
plan of action.
- Support
of Rotarians in the host country is essential especially in the management
of a project.
The Waterville Rotary Club encourages other clubs and
districts to participate in World Community Service projects, cooperates on
joint projects, but chooses generally to be the primary partner in such
projects.
